The monarchy is just another tool the powers that be use to detract the masses from issues of greater importance. Let's not talk about the problems and challenges we face in the 21st century on the news today...let's talk about the fact the queen is coming for a visit or that her husband has a chest infection. Ritual, pomp and circumstance. Woohoo.
I suppose if I were willing to take the time I could dig up just what maintaining the positions of the GovGen and the provincial LGs cost us as taxpayers.
Then there is the concept of monarchy itself. Privileges and powers bestowed not because you're earned them but because you were part of a lucky sperm club. How could anyone that believes in equality of individuals support monarchy?
